Roffey Group Centenary Walk

Date: 2nd Jul 2020 Author: Sal Dartnell

This year 1st Roffey Scout Group is 100 years old. GSL Chris Sillett writes:

“We are the oldest continuously running Scout Group in Horsham Town and we had planned to celebrate in style. We had many events planned but the Covid19 pandemic has meant most have had to be abandoned as we are unable to continue face to face meetings during the lockdown. One such event was a sponsored walk around Horsham park with all young members walking laps to try and get to a total of 100 miles.

The event was scheduled for Sunday 14th June so we adapted it by asking our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and adult volunteers to all go out in the morning with their families and walk at least 2 miles each to see if we could still walk 100 miles collectively.

The response was amazing. Altogether 55 young members and adult volunteers took part and managed an impressive 210 miles excluding that completed by accompanying family members. Lots of photos were taken on the day.

This event was intended to raise funds to help us celebrate our centenary in style. Our target was £1500 and by the day of the walk we had already raised over £1200.

At 1st Roffey Scout Group we have managed to remain active by running virtual meetings for our members throughout the lockdown period. It has proved to be a bit of a challenge, but our young members have been really enthusiastic and some memorable virtual meetings have now been completed with may more to come.”
